We’ll see how far I get (feel free to check in with me on Twitter to see if I’ve started swearing in Italian yet). I’ve set the ambitious goal of watching ALL THREE Godfather films in one day, breaking only for more drinks and dessert. While watching The Godfather, I recommend drinking The Closer.Ĭombine ingredients in a cocktail shaker, blend well, then strain into a glass with a large ice cube. But if you want to go a little further, pick up a bottle of Sambuca and digest your dinner like the Corleones. If you find yourself cooking for a large crowd on T-Day, you may just want to keep things simple and enjoy a nice bottle of red wine with this film (Sicilian or Southern Italian-origin would be my choice for authenticity’s sake). Hollywood was still figuring out what it wanted to be when this film was made, and The Godfather said it loud and clear- the old studio system was dead, long live the auteur. You see the wine and the red sauce and the piles of wedding cake that scream ITALIAN, but also the quiet, subtle moments that pull the viewer in and make you feel the story. Then there are the 1940’s period sets that still feel a bit like 70’s gritty NYC, and Francis Ford Coppola’s blend of cinema verite mixed with grandiose storytelling. You have the faded Hollywood icon in the form of Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone contrasting with the brash, exciting newcomer Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. What I will say, however, is that as a fan of late 60’s/early 70’s cinema, this film encompasses so much of what I love about the era. I’m not going to rehash the plot of The Godfather because really, it’s been almost 50 years, and if you don’t already know that this is a movie about a large mafia crime family, heaven help you. This Thanksgiving, I’ll be watching The Godfather ( DVD/ Download). If you’re smart, you’ll choose something that celebrates, eating, drinking, and above all, la famiglia. Because that’s when you settle in with a good film. Sure, we’ll come together with loved ones and enjoy some mashed potatoes and stuffing, but post-meal is where the real magic happens. This week is Thanksgiving, and I don’t know about y’all, but I am ready to eat, drink, and watch movies. Float sherry on top, and garnish with a citrus wheel and/or mint. Shake until chilled, then strain into a tiki mug filled with ice. While watching Insomnia, I recommend drinking a Fog Cutter cocktail.Ĭombine orange juice, lemon juice, orgeat, rum, gin, and brandy in a shaker with ice. As police officers chase the murderer through soupy air, visibility is about as low as the chances of making it out there alive. Learn it, Dormer.Īlthough there are a lot of tense scenes in this film, one of the best is set in a remote Alaskan fishing cabin shrouded in fog. Her name isn’t “honey”-it’s Detective Burr. Hilary Swank does her best to not get lost in their shadows, playing a local detective trying to solve crimes while magnanimously shaking off Dormer’s misogynist language. Robin Williams turns in an elegant, terrifying performance as pulp novelist Walter Finch, whose real-life crimes are even more twisted than those in his books, and seeing Pacino and Williams together is akin to watching Michelangelo and DaVinci working side-by-side. Thus begins a cat and mouse game of trying to nail the bad guy while still protecting his own secrets. Things get muddled when he accidentally shoots his partner, and the only witness is the killer he’s searching for. He’s got his own internal affairs investigation percolating back in California, but for now, he’s focused on the task at hand: find the murderer. What day is it? Did I wash the conditioner out of my hair? Did I leave too many loose ends hanging on a crime I committed while delirious from lack of rest? Things I ask myself on a daily basis now.Ī tight psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, Insomnia stars Al Pacino as Will Dormer, a hot shot LA detective sent to Alaska to work a teenage girl’s homicide case. Watching the film Insomnia ( Disc / Download), I can relate to Al Pacino with his glassy stares and confused expressions because they’re mine. If you’re like me, the pandemic years really messed with your sleep.
